Welcome to Dreamlawns, where we understand the scorching heat can take a toll on your lawn. Living in Southeast Virginia’s transitional climate means enduring potentially harsh winters and blistering summers, leaving our turf stressed. While we can’t control the weather, we can certainly take steps to support our grass through the heat.

Here are three tips to help your lawn thrive during hot weather:

Morning Watering: Optimal watering time is between 4 am and 7 am when temperatures are cooler, reducing evaporation loss. This timeframe also allows for sufficient drying. Avoid watering in the afternoon to prevent excessive moisture loss, and refrain from evening or nighttime watering to prevent fungal issues.

Aim for ½ to ¾ of an inch of water, 2-3 times weekly, adjusting for drought conditions. Overwatering leads to shallow root systems, so resist the urge to water daily.

Minimize Foot Traffic: Walking on a well-hydrated lawn poses no harm, but dry, heat-stressed grass can suffer damage. Ensure your mower blades are sharp to make clean cuts, reducing moisture loss and preventing a dull, frosted appearance on your lawn.

Mow High and Avoid Midday Mowing: Set your mower blades to 3.5-4 inches for a taller cut, promoting deeper root growth and better water absorption. Mow during cooler parts of the day to avoid stressing the grass further.

These tips will help you and your lawn stay resilient through the summer heat.
